Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute (CPERI)
Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute, a non-profit research and technological development (RTD) organization was founded in 1985 in Thessaloniki, Greece. From 1987 to March 2000, Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute was a member of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), headquartered in the island of Crete. In March 2000, Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute became a founding member of a new research center, the Center for Research and Technology-Hellas (CERTH), established in Thessaloniki and administered by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT) of the then Ministry of Development, while in October 2009 GSRT became part of the Ministry of Education. CERTH until today is the sole research center existing in Northern Greece, within the regions of Macedonia and Thrace. The European Commission and GSRT have supported the initial development of CPERI's facilities and infrastructure through several regional structural grants.
The development strategy of Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute has been based on establishing strategic collaborations with leading international industrial corporations, developing strong links with Research Centers and Universities within the European Research Area (ERA) and contributing to the training of young scientists and engineers in state-of-the- art technologies. Acting as a catalyst of regional developmentChemical Process Engineering Research Institute is also consistently pursuing strong interactions and collaborations with small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in Northern Greece.
Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute today extends over 4.989 m2 of office and laboratory space and possesses 1.797 m2 of storage space. Throughout its lifetime CPERI has acquired excellent analytical instrumentation and developed state-of-the- art experimental units and setups, valued at several million Euros.
The Institute for Solid Fuels Technology and Applications (ISFTA) is the main Greek organisation for the promotion of research and technological development aiming at the improved and integrated exploitation of solid fuels and their by-products.
ISFTA was established by Presidential Decree in 1987. It is a legal entity under private law and is supervised by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning & Religious Affairs, preserving its administrative and financial independence. Since 2002, it is one of the five institutes of the National Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) and operates under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning & Religious Affairs.
Since its foundation, ISFTA was located in the facilities of the old factory of nitrogenous fertilizers - formerly known as AEVAL - in the area of Ptolemais, Greece. It was in 2007 that the Institute moved finally in its private building - again in the area of Ptolemais.
ISFTA has been awarded an Excellence (Aristeia in Greek) title in Research and Technology and lies in the 6th position among more than 40 Greek Research and Technology Organisations supervised by the GSRT. This ranking was held in 2005 and was performed by the Greek Ministry of Development and EU evaluators - a procedure that takes place on a 5-year basis.
